Six Nairobi County permits are set to be renewed by March 31, 2022

If you are a business owner based in Nairobi, you are required to renew your business permits by March 31, 2022. 

The Kenya Revenue Authority, Nairobi Metropolitan Service, and Nairobi City County Government have reminded the public and business community that business permits and license renewals for the year 2022 will close on March 31, 2022.

The Single-Business Permit

This is a license that is provided to any business that is based in Nairobi City County and operates from a permanent location. The license is good for a year. New applications will be accepted for a period of 12 months from the date of payment.

Permit renewals can be done online through the self-service portal if the status of the business does not change. Before they begin operating, all traders must pay for the Single Business Permit.

Fire Inspection Certificate

Every business operating from permanent premises in Nairobi City County is required to have this license.

The license is good for a year. New applications are only valid for one calendar year, from January to December. Permit renewals can be done online through the self-service portal if the status of the business does not change. The Fire Inspection Certificate is compulsory for all traders.

Land Rates

Land rates must be paid by somebody, a company, or an organization that owns land within Nairobi’s jurisdiction and has a valid title deed. Land rates are an annual levy imposed by a local government on every piece of land with a valid title deed.

If the current year’s rate is not paid by March 31st, a monthly interest rate of 3% will be levied until the balance is paid in full.

Advertising fees on signboards

Small signboards, signs, and wall branding outside the business premises are subject to advertising expenses.

Advertising fees on signboards must be paid by all clients who have signboards outside their business premises.

Food Handlers certificate

Individuals who work in restaurants and hotels pay for this. After a medical inspection, all food handler’s certificates are renewed every six months when they expire.

Food hygiene  

This license is provided to all hotels and diners in Nairobi City County once a year. The license is good for a year. Each year, from January to December, for a 12-month period. Once a year, hotels and restaurants must pay for a food hygiene certificate.

There is no longer any grace period for Nairobi City County permits and licenses. After the County administration altered the law, this was deleted. When the prior permits expire, the new ones are due.

Only land rates are exempt from payment until March 31, 2022.

KRA, NMS, and NCCG allowed the dealers until the end of February 2022 to make payments as a gesture of goodwill. This came following a meeting in January 2022 with authorities and representatives from SMEs under the auspices of the Central Business District SMEs Association.
